The Seagull (1895), written and described by Anton P. Chekhov as a comedy, was staged for the first time in 1896 and considered a failure. Two years later, Stanislavsky directed it at Moscow Art Theatre and the production became legendary. Slovenian director Tomi Janežič is staging it for the second time; this time the work on the performance originated from his work with postgraduate acting students at the Academy of Art in Novi Sad (Serbia) and continued with an expanded team of experienced actors at the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad. The process that spanned 16 months was based on intensive acting work and a practical analysis of the text – through action, in space. The performance thematises creativity itself, attempting to explore the topics of the play not only at the level of contents but also by applying a diversity of appropriate performative strategies and theatrical means. It treats the themes that are crystallised through the process of each act with specific theatrical procedures, strategies and focus. The Seagull is an extensive art project composed of four performances – regarding their content, themes and performative strategies, the acts could be considered four separate pieces – that integrates and traverses various art fields.
“A certified adventurist among directors, Tomi Janežič, decided to attempt a full staging of The Seagull, along with all of its known dichotomies (comedy-tragedy, old age-youth, tradition-new) and ambiguities (life-art/ reality-illusion, substance-form). He sought an answer to “How?“ with Chekov and accounts related to him and the students of Drama and their teachers. This is to say – at the very source. And an answer to “Why?“ was provided by the performance itself.“ (from the critique of Igor Burič)
