Publication Day, Night + Man = Rhythm: Anthology of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Criticism 1918 – 1960 (Ljubljana: Maska, Nomad Dance Academy Slovenija, JSKD, 2018) presents a selection of theoretical, historical, and critical articles on contemporary dance, modern ballet, and dance culture that were published in the local periodicals between both world wars and in the decade and a half after WWII. The research for the anthology revealed the extent and energy of local media production and pronounced interest in such art and its culture in the period of both monarchies and the first socialist Yugoslavia. The anthology presents the first articles in local media from the fields of history and theory of contemporary dance and modern ballet in sets, organising the first reflexive attempts of local dance history (Rado Kregar), visionary theoretical elaborations on contemporary dance in the circles of local historic avant-gardes, to be more precise, Constructivists and the Tank circle (Ferdo Delak, Avgust Černigoj), theories of contemporary dance and modern body in the circles of youth Christian-social group or the so-called Movement of the Cross (Franjo Čibej, Pino Mlakar) and cultural history of classical and modern dance art (Kristina Vrhovec-Brenk). This is followed by critical and theoretical contributions that record and review the dance work of protagonists of contemporary dance and ballet (Lidija Wisiak and Vaclav Vlček, Ruth Vavpotič, Meta Vidmar, Katja Delak, Pia and Pino Mlakar, Marta “Brina” Paulin) of the Slovenian cultural space in that period that had been inter-cultural and international from its very beginning. In the chapter The Age of Dance and the Body, a highly selective presentation of the abundant corpus of dance-cultural media reports from the period between both world wars is featured and aims to reveal the broadness of its spectrum to the reader. The book is concluded with the chapter Devil at the Village – Dance in Slovenia 1946 – 1960 that documents the attempt of the institutionalisation of modern dance art in the framework of Ballet SNG in Ljubljana and the establishment of cultural project of new Yugoslav ballet mostly through the records written by Pia and Pino Mlakar. In the neurotic period of the development of Yugoslav socialist exception, that swiftly shifted between possible directions in art and culture, this proved to be a rather impossible project, which is documented in two articles by Ksenija Hribar in the Epilogue. Media documentation that was selected for the Anthology is contextualised in original articles by Rok Vevar (the editor) and  Aldo Milohnić, Ph.D., language editor of publication was Iztok Ilc and assistant editor Jasmina Založnik. This anthology will be followed up with a second part that will document the tendencies of contemporary dance criticism between 1960 and 1999 when contemporary dance became parallel to the local institutional cultural network.
